For a couple of years now, I’ve always had a bird guide with me 24/7. It’s iBird Explorer Pro loaded on my iphone. It’s not the most comprehensive nor best source for identifying birds, but it’s my most used guide. It’s especially useful because you can listen to a bird’s call and identify it by sound– something that can’t be done with a book. Some species of birds are so similar that their call is the key to identification, i.e. the small flycatchers.
My wife and I both paid $29.99 for iBird Explorer Pro and it’s been worth every penny of it. Now it’s on sale for $2.99 for a limited time through the Apple Store. At this price, you don’t have to be a serious birder to have this useful app. It is available for ipads as well. It has won numerous awards, including ‘best app ever’. This is a bargain, pass the word.
